The healing through Aromatherapy involves "psychoneuroimmunology"; the belief that mental and physical health are intimately linked. Feeling relaxed and unstressed is important to maintaining the health status of the immune system, which in turn is important in maintaining physical health.
How your sense of smell works
Your sense of smell is governed by the olfactory nerve which starts high in the nasal passages. This nerve leads transmits an aroma to the olfactory bulb of the cranial nerve then leads directly into the limbic system of the brain. The chemoreceptors contained within this system differentiate each aroma, sending electrical stimulus to the memory center of the brain. Each of these aromas may trigger a long-forgotten memory and/or promote healing in the various body systems.
